Creating SMTP connector in Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server

Create New SMTP Connector:

Open the Exchange System Manager and Navigate to Administrative Groups, First Administrative Group, Routing Groups, First Routing Group, Connectors. Right-click on the “Connectors” container and select New > SMTP Connector.

Choose a Name for the SMTP Connector, e.g. “Default SMTP Connector” or “Impactia Connector” or “Impactia Failover Connector”.

Choose Routing Destination – Under the General Tab:

For the Default SMTP Connector or Impactia Failover Connector; If your organization sends email directly out to the internet without being intentionally routed via another specific smart host/email gateway, leave the setting ‘Use DNS to route each address space on this connector’ as it is. If you route outbound email via a specific smart host/email gateway, select ‘Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts’. You will need to obtain the name or IP of the smart host and enter it on the line below this setting.

For the Impactia Connector Select ‘Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts’. In the field under this setting enter the smart hosts names: US + Canada: mailer1.impactia.com; mailer2.impactia.com International: out2.impactia.com;out3.impactia.com

Add Local Bridgehead Server –Under the General Tab:

Click on the “Add” button, you will now be presented with a list of SMTP Virtual Servers.

Choose an SMTP Virtual Server to associate with your connector.

Click OK.

Associate an “Address Space” with this connector – Under the Address Space Tab:

Click Add, you will now be presented with the “Add Address Space” dialogue box.

Select SMTP. The “Internet Address Space Properties” dialogue box will now appear.

Put an asterisk (*) in the “E-mail Domain” field (connector will forward mail to any SMTP domain).

For the Default SMTP Connector; Leave the value in the Cost field at its default value of 1

For the Impactia Connector; Change the value in the Cost field to 10

For the Impactia Failover Connector; Change the value in the Cost field to 30

Click OK.
